A place of great spiritual and cultural significance to the local people of Ngati Porou, Maunga Hikurangi is a gateway to great Maori history and the legendary feats of Maui and his whanau (family).

As the highest non-volcanic peak on the North Island, Maunga Hikurangi is the first place in the world to see the sunrise.
Rising above the rural community of Ruatoria, Maunga Hikurangi, or Mount Hikurangi is 1,752 m (5,748 ft) tall and is a site of cultural significance for the local Ngati Porou people.
It is believed to the first part of the Aotearoa that emerged from the sea when Maui fished up the North Island.

ST MARY'S CHURCH -TIKITIKI
St Mary's church in Tikitiki serves as a memorial to the Māori men from the East Coast between Paritu (south of Gisborne) and Tarakeha/Torere (east of Õpōtiki) who fought and died in the First World War.
St Mary's was built in the 1920's at the instigation of Ngati Porou leader Sir Āpirana Ngata.
